Basketball hoops recalled due to impact hazard

Health Canada issued a recall on September 22 regarding basketball hoops due to a potential risk of impact

The affected products are Spalding’s Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Hoops. The hoop features a 50 or 54 inch clear acrylic ring with a visible H frame supporting the backboard or a 54 inch clear acrylic backboard fitted with aluminum trim, without H-frame.

All panel models are set to a black metal post with a black metal arm. The wording ‘Spalding’ appears on the black base cover while the wording ‘6E’ is molded into the back of the base. The numbers 1010, 1011, or 1012 appear to the right of the warning, which appear on the front of the panel. The recalled model numbers are: 6E1010 – 54″/6 89344 41397 6, 6E1011 – 54″/6 89344 41399 0 and 6E1012 – 50″/6 89344 41369 9.

The problem lies in its welds, the arm securing the panel to the post may fail and, if so, the panel may fall, posing an impact hazard. As of September 20, 2022, no incidents or injuries have been reported to the company in Canada. In the United States, two incidents where the panel detached from the basket, causing injuries, were deplored to the company.

WHAT TO DO

Consumers should then have used the recalled portable basketball hoop and contacted the company to schedule an appointment with a technician who removed the original bra and replaced it with another bra.

For more information, consumers may contact Spalding by phone at 1-800-284-8339, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or visit the company’s website.
