Disc Golf is freedom and fun for all: “It is one of the sports that is developing the most today”

We know the principle of golf, even without playing it: it is a question of bringing a small ball in a few strokes towards a hole. A course of 9 or 18 holes is played in 3 or 4 hours, walking in a domestic or wilder nature. A discipline that allows you to be outside, to walk slowly, to concentrate and to relax at the same time. But a hobby that is expensive: between the membership card, the fees for the reservations, the panoply of the golfer (from the clubs to the outfit through the caddy), it is not given to everyone.

However, we can feel these same emotions and this same pleasure of outdoor sport with Disc Golf. A sport modeled (even at the level of names like the birdie, the albatross, the fairway) on golf but with a totally different state of mind. During a long course, athletes must send their disc (plastic, like a Frisbee) as close as possible to a “hole” which is in fact an approved metal basket replaced by a crown of chains designated to stop the disc. The throwing mode is free (backhand or forehand, and even “rolling” by rolling the disc), and only the point of arrival of the disc counts. On average, a hole can be located 70m and up to 200m from the tee. It is played in three, four or five throws… which can land in the water, in the woods, in the sand!

A very democratic sport

For Jean-Louis Tanghe, president of the Braine Disc Golf Club and passionate player who launched the Braine l’Alleud course in the Parc du Bourdon, ” At the beginning, we take up Disc Golf for fun because we heard about it, it happens outside, it’s fun, it doesn’t seem complicated because we remember the Frisbee on the beach “, explains this good level competitor, “ And the more we play, the more we realize that it is a complete sport, which is technical and which requires scales and scales to manage to play strategically or in force, to aim finely, … We take ourselves very fast in the game His two sons also play there successfully in competition.

The great advantage of disc golf is that membership in a club costs around a hundred euros a year, that the outfit is free, and that at the start, you can invest in a standard plastic disc of about fifteen euros! A record that we keep for many years. In the caddy of Jean-Louis Tanghe, there are stored about twenty. The material, the shape can be different depending on the use: for the drive (the long throw), the approach (medium shot) or the putt (about 20 m, towards the basket).

Finally, you can play it at any age, as a family, whether you are women or men: the principle is the same for everyone and you play in groups of 2 up to 5.

Many curious during the Covid

Could disc golf be the sport of the future? “It is one of the sports that is developing the most today, with 4 new courses installed every day in the world and an exponential development according to pdga.com “, explains Jean-Louis Tanghe. There is also growing interest in disc golf in Belgium, where there are a good dozen clubs and courses. There are many initiations and they have really increased following the covid: outdoor sports have defined crowds. “In a single initiation, you will find that you can throw the disc three times further at the end than on your first attempt.”

In the United States, in Scandinavia, it’s madness: there are dedicated courses everywhere. In Finland, there are even more than 1000! An application allows you to locate them if you are bitten and you travel. ” At the club, out of a hundred regular players and fifty members who compete “. In Belgium, no pro at the moment, there are nearly 1000 in the world alone. But if this sport continues to grow as in recent years, both in Wallonia and in Flanders, why not?
