European places, descents, VAR, numbers… The big point regulations before the first day

The Ligue 1 season begins this Friday evening with the match between OL and Ajaccio (9 p.m.). Reinforced calendar impacted by the World Cup in Qatar, four descents, new numbers, European places…

After two and a half months of waiting, lovers of French football finally find their Ligue 1. This Friday evening, the championship opens with the poster between Olympique Lyonnais and AC Ajaccio at Groupama Stadium (9 p.m.). Here is everything you need to know before diving into this season which promises to be so special, especially from a regulatory point of view.

Four descents

This is undoubtedly the greatest originality of this season. In order to act on a transition to 18 clubs, Ligue 1 will experience four descents at the end of this 2022-2023 exercise. The 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th in the standings will be directly relegated to the lower level, without the possibility of being drafted in the play-offs, while only the first two in Ligue 2 will be promoted. What to expect fierce encounters between the less good students, who will have to fight to the end to keep their place in the elite at the end of this season of all dangers.

European places

Regarding the fight for a qualification in the European Cup, there will be no change this season. As in previous years, the first two in the standings will qualify directly for the Champions League and the third will have to go through a third preliminary round then a play-off to validate their C1 ticket, like AS Monaco this year. . The fourth place is directly qualifying for the group stage of the Europa League and the fifth for the play-offs to access the group stage of the Europa Conference League. The cards will however be redistributed for the following exercise: at the end of the 2023-2024 season, the third in Ligue 1 will be directly qualified for the Champions League if France remains the 5th European nation in the UEFA ranking at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

A suitable schedule

An extended championship and an insane calendar. World Cup in Qatar in the middle of the season obliges, Ligue 1 had to adapt to stall the 38 days despite a break of a month and a half to let the best nations on the planet compete in the Persian Gulf . Ligue 1 will exceptionally be played over ten months, until June 3, with a truce to let the internationals leave after the 15th day, the weekend of November 11 to 13. After the World Cup, Ligue 1 will resume in the middle of the week, on December 27 and 28, with in particular PSG-Strasbourg and OM-Toulouse for a French Boxing Day, just ten days after the World Cup final.

VAR, changes, numbers…

Little change in the rules of the elite this season. The only new rule, quite symbolic: the possibility for players to wear a number ranging from 1 to 99, whereas the limit was previously set at 30. Some have already taken advantage of this new regulation to wear a new number, like Mamadou Sakho (75) or Wahbi Khazri (99). It should also be noted that Ligue 1 players will be playing with a new ball this season, since the championship has entered into a new partnership with Kipsta, which is replacing equipment manufacturer Uhlsport.

Naturally, video assistance to the referee is renewed for this season, as is the possibility of making five changes per match and having an additional substitute in the event of a concussion.
