Joan Laporta is doing a colossal job at the helm of Barça this summer. By selling the club’s TV rights, he made it possible to straighten out the accounts and to be very active in the transfer window. Robert Lewandowski, Jules Koundé, Raphinha, Franck Kessié and Andreas Christensen have all arrived and Ousmane Dembélé has extended his contract. There remains, however, a major problem. New players still cannot be registered.
FC Barcelona and La Liga have a different reading of the club’s account lines. As we explain to you here, where the management claims to have made 667 M€ in capital gain, La Liga sees “only” 517 M€. In Catalonia, it is assured that it is a simple matter of interpretation and that the dispute will soon be settled. This will require finding a new economic lever to free up new money.
Barca owe Pique €52m
One of the solutions, as revealed by the Catalan media macaw, is called Gérard Pique. With all the salary reports the central defender accepted at the time of covid-19, and then again last summer when it came to registering rookies such as Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay, an agreement had been reached with the direction so that all of this money is paid to him during the 2022/2023 season. The total represents €52 million!
Pique helped the club when they were in trouble but it didn’t come for free. The defender wants to be paid as much as it is all the same 70% of his emoluments which have been postponed. A new agreement offered to Barça to be relieved again but it is above all the sum that challenges, especially in relation to the status of the player.
