Although he had not played since May, when he came on in the last minutes of his former club Atletico Madrid’s La Liga match against Real Sociedad, Luis Suarez did not only had one training session with the Nacional group, on Monday. His coach, Pablo Repetto, nevertheless decided to retain him in his group for this quarter-final poster of the Copa Sudamericana, the South American equivalent of the Europa League.
Luis Suarez therefore logically started the game on the bench, before appearing in the 74th minute of play. And now, his entry into play, 17 years after wearing the Nacional’s white jersey for the first time, has been given a standing ovation by the 30,000 supporters of the Gran Parque Central stadium in Montevideo.

Already on Sunday, when he had just landed on Uruguayan soil, the former FC Barcelona striker had received a triumphant welcome during a brief appearance at the Grand Parque Central, the Nacional stadium, where he was came to address his fans.
Top scorer in the history of the Uruguayan selection (65 years old), Luis Suarez began his career at Nacional Montevideo in 2005, at the age of 18. Before a long journey that led him to Ajax Amsterdam (111 goals in 159 games), Liverpool in 2011 and FC Barcelona in 2015. So here he is now back to his roots.
