Football: Ligue 1 could soon change its name

This Thursday, September 22, during the “Demain le sport” forum, Vincent Labrune, president of the Professional Football League, made several announcements, including the possible name change of Ligue 1.

Farewell to Ligue 1? The French football championship is not going to disappear, but it should change its name in the more or less near future. This was announced on Thursday by Vincent Labrune. Invited to discuss the future of Ligue 1 during the “Tomorrow sport” meetings, the president of the Professional Football League plans to rename it in a desire for development.

“Ligue 1 is a brand that will have to be dusted off and renamed,” he said. The former president of OM gave no further details on a date of change, nor any leads concerning the new name. “We open a reflection,” he simply slipped.

The French championship has been called Ligue 1 for twenty years (2002). In the past, it was called National Division from 1932 to 1972, then Division 1 from 1972 to 2002.
