The Frenchman disposed of Belgian David Goffin (62nd) in two sets (6-3, 6-3) in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Metz on Tuesday.
In a duel between former winners of the Metz tournament, Frenchman Gilles Simon (wild-card and 175th in the world) easily beat in two sets (6-3, 6-3) Belgian David Goffin (62nd) in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Metz on Tuesday.
Gilles Simon, who will retire at the end of the season, won the Moselle Open in 2010, 2013 and 2018. Against Goffin, he was able to win the long rallies that punctuated the match and scored two breaks in the first set to win 6-3.
Opposite, the Belgian, who won in Metz in 2014, committed far too many unforced errors to maintain his break lead (2-1) in the second set. Simon, who was invited by the tournament organizers, broke immediately and won on his first match point (6-3).
In the second round, the former world number 6 (in 2009) will be opposed to the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (65th at the ATP), who defeated the Russian Aslan Karatsev (39th) a little earlier in the day (7-5, 6-3).
