Japanese teenager Saki Baba won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship on Sunday, beating Canadian Monet Chun in the match-play final at Chambers Bay in Washington.
Baba, 17, became the first Japanese player to win the tournament since Michiko Hattori in 1985 beating Chun, 21, by 11 and 9.
“Throughout the lap I thought I was going to win, I was going to win,” Baba said. “I’m so happy to be able to write my name next to Michiko Hattori’s.”
Baba reached the 36-hole final beating 17-year-old American Bailey Shoemaker by 7 and 6 in the semi-finals on Saturday to earn a bye to the 2023 US Women’s Open.
