Golf: LIV players claim the allocation of points in the world ranking

LIV players revolt. Again, yes. Supported by Saudi Arabia, the latter claimed the price in retroactive account of points that they estimated to have gleaned in the events of this circuit. “A world ranking without LIV players would be incomplete and inaccurate“, they argued in a letter addressed to the chairman of the appropriate committee, Peter Dawson, believing that this situation would be comparable to the exclusion of England, Argentina and Belgium from the FIFA rankings.

In this letter, the 48 signatories who participated in the Chicago tournament last weekend, including the winner, the Australian Cameron Smith (N.3) and the American Dustin Johnson, former world N.1, request the allocation of the points obtained from 54-hole (three-round) tournaments will entitle them to participate, in the same way as other 72-hole (four-round) tournaments organized by the North American PGA Tour.

We ask you to take a positive decision quickly

The challenge for these golfers is that the winning points allow them to qualify for the Grand Slam tournaments. They were allowed to participate in the US Open and the British Open (won by Cameron Smith) this year, the LIV circuit having been set up after these two Majors. “The competitive level of a LIV Tour tournament is at least equal to that of a PGA event“, say the players. “We know this because we participated in both.”

The letter points out that the LIV has among its participants 21 of the last 51 major winners and notes Johnson’s fall from 13th to 22nd in the world rankings, despite winning, second and third place in the last events of this new circuit. “We ask that you make a positive decision quickly – in the interest of the integrity of the rankings, the game and all of us who love the sport“, they concluded.
