Welsh XV full-back Liam Williams will miss his side’s autumn international tour after suffering a collarbone injury in his first game for Cardiff, the club announced on Tuesday.
The rear was injured on Saturday in the first half of the match between his new club Cardiff and Munster (20-13 victory) and underwent surgery on Monday evening which should keep him away from the field for many weeks.
“Liam Williams was activated last night after his collarbone injury”the club said in its statement.
“Williams is now entering a 12 to 16 week recovery period”the club said.
Welsh XV coach Wayne Pivac, whose team will host New Zealand, Argentina, Georgia and Australia in November, will therefore have to do without Williams’ experience, 81 caps, and his versatility , Williams also offering wing solutions.
Pivac could call on Johnny McNicholl and Leigh Halfpenny for the full-back position. Halfpenny hasn’t played in 14 months with a serious knee injury but could recover in time for the fall tour.
