The friendly football match between Atlético Madrid and Juventus Turin scheduled for Sunday in Tel Aviv has been canceled for “security reasons”, the two clubs announced on Saturday, as armed clashes between Israel and a Palestinian armed group of Gaza.
“Due to the current security situation, Comtec Group (company in charge of organizing the meeting, editor’s note), Juventus and Atlético Madrid announce that the friendly match between the two teams which was to take place this Sunday, August 7 at the Bloomfield stadium in Tel Aviv is canceled”, is it indicated in a press release published by the two formations.
Atlético was to contest its last preparation meeting on this occasion before facing Getafe, on August 15, during the first day of La Liga. Juve will start the same day its course in the Italian championship named Sassuolo.
The Bloomfield stadium in Tel Aviv hosted the 2022 Champions Trophy last Sunday between PSG, reigning French champions, and FC Nantes, winner of the cup (PSG victory 4-0).
But deadly clashes broke out on Friday between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an armed group in the Gaza Strip. The exchanges of fire have already left a dozen dead on the Palestinian side, in what represents the worst outbreak of violence between the two enemies since the blitzkrieg last year.
On Saturday, the Israeli army said it expected a “one-week” operation.
