In a press conference, Thomas Meunier remembered his past as a PSG player, between 2016 and 2020. The side of Belgium admitted to having never retained a boycott of the World Cup in Qatar, even if he found “a pity” FIFA’s ban on wearing the “One Love” armband under penalty of sanction.

Thomas Meunier was saddened by FIFA’s decision to ban the wearing of the “One Love” armband for captains during the World Cup, under penalty of sanctions. “We wanted to use this armband. We talked about it between us. We came to the conclusion not to wear it. It’s a shame”, claimed the side of Belgium, this Monday at a press conference, in proposals transcribed by L’Equipe. FIFA also refused to see the Red Devils show off their second jersey because of the word ‘Love’ present on the inside of the shirt on Monday. A word which will therefore have to be withdrawn, as Peter Bossaert, the general manager of the Belgian federation, regretted with Het Nieuwsblad. Aware of the rules in Qatar and the differences with European culture, Meunier expressed his desire to focus on football, as Belgium enter the competition on Wednesday evening against Canada (8 p.m. French time).

“I can’t spit in the soup and say: ‘Qatar are motherfuckers'”

“We wanted to act for certain causes. But everything is subject to suspension and sanction. What should be done? Nothing. We came to play football. Qatar has been under discussion for months, years. We all know the human rights situation here.”, he recalled, repeating that except in the event of a boycott of all the teams before the 8th or quarter-finals, nothing was going to change. Asked about a possible decision not to come to the tournament on his part, he explained his “delicate” situation due to his time as a PSG player, between 2016 and 2020. “I played for four years at PSG. I can’t spit in the soup and say: ‘Qatar, they’re bastards’. I can’t afford to take a position. I knew it when I signed my contract. I was aware of everything that is going on here. You could also say that I endorsed him by agreeing to work for a state club”commented on the element of Borussia Dortmund, who would have agreed to come, unless his Federation had opted for a boycott of the 2022 World Cup.
