“My career goal is to win a Grand Slam tournament,” says Caroline Garcia

It’s a form of rebirth: French tennis player Caroline Garcia rose to 17th place in the WTA rankings published on Monday, moving up 18 places after her victory at the Cincinnati tournament on Sunday August 21. She had not reached such a ranking since October 2018, she who was world No.4 at the best of her career. “I feel much better physically“, she confirms to franceinfo on Monday.

franceinfo: Last May, you thought you were still 79ᵉ in the world. When did everything change?

Caroline Garcia : I think there are several parameters. Physically, I came back in good health, even if there were always small glitches, it was much better and every week I was more and more solid. The path is clear, when I’m on the court I know what I have to do.

“I feel much better physically. All the work done on the court, in training and outside, has paid off”.

It has nothing to do with the player who has been in doubt for three or four years…

It is true that in recent years there have been doubts and complicated moments. There weren’t many wins. Since the beginning of the year, there has really been a lot of work done. A great positive mentality from my whole team to move forward. It didn’t pay off right away, there were physical glitches, but things gradually built up.

Do you feel like you have regained the level that allowed you to reach fourth place in the world four years ago?

No, a lot of things are different. Obviously, I still produce an aggressive game like before. Maybe even more aggressive still. We will continue to build on these good results to make further progress.

The US Open starts next Monday: what are your ambitions?

Already, my main objective: to recover in the next few days. Then, we will have to prepare well for my first lap. Obviously, my career goal is to win a Grand Slam tournament. We’ll see when that happens. But each time, I am ready to seize the opportunities that come my way.
