Australian Nick Kyrgios, finalist of the last Wimbledon tournament, announced on Instagram on Tuesday that he will not participate in the Laver Cup (September 23-25). “No Laver Cup for me this year!!! I just wanted you all to know“, indicated on the social network the former world number 13, today fallen to the 63rd rank. “I have to spend time with my family and my lovely girlfriend“, justified the 27-year-old Australian, who also gave up competing in the singles table of the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta (July 25-31). Kyrgios however won the double with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
In this fifth edition of the Laver Cup, Kyrgios was to join the world team alongside the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, as well as the Americans Taylor Fritz and Jack Sock. The team coached by the legendary John McEnroe thus loses an essential element, especially since it will leave with an outsider status against the formidable European team composed, among others, of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. This exhibition, created in 2017, is organized by the company Team 8 managed by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick.
