The medical visits can sometimes prove fatal in a player’s career. Monday 1uh August, this was the case for the central three-quarters of Bristol, Alapati Leiua (33 years old), failed during his medical visit to Valves (Pro D2). Flagship recruit of the Morbihan club, the Samoan international (31 caps) will therefore never wear the RCV jersey. Before him, many players found themselves in this situation by not satisfying the traditional medical examination. Rugby News offers you some of them, through a non-exhaustive list.
Dan Carter tops the list
You may have erased it from your memory, but the All Black Dan Carter was indeed rejected during his medical visit with the Race 92. Arrived in Hauts-de-Seine in 2015, the former best player in the world became French champion with Racing 92 a year later and was estimated with Ciel et Blanc until 2018. New Zealand opener should have returned to Île-de-France, as a medical joker for the Springboks Pat Lambie, except that Carter did not respond favorably to the medical visit and never put on the Racing 92 jersey again. Following cervical problems, the 2015 world champion was declared unfit to practice rugby in France.
Nakarawa, Kunatani, Boughanmi failed…
The Fijian Leon Nakarawa had to signUlster in the summer of 2021. The ex-Racing 92 player was then playing for the Glasgow Warriors in Scotland. But the Fijian giant was challenged during his medical visit with the Northern Irish province. Since then, he has returned to the field with Toulon last year and is committed to Castres for next season.
Same scenario for another Fijian: Semi Kunatani. Passed by the Harlequins and the Toulouse stadiumthe Olympic rugby sevens champion had been rejected during his medical visit to Castres in 2020 following a detected knee injury. He then joined the dismissed club Tel-Aviv Heat.
Another case had caused controversy not so long ago, the case Mohammad Bouganmi. At the end of the contract with Pau, he should have signed up with Lyons. But a knee problem will derail the medical examination of the solid pillar. This situation did not please the ex-player of Toulon and La Rochelle, who also contested this decision. He will sign a few weeks later on the side of Narbonne in Pro D2 and landed in Rouen this summer.
… Without forgetting Lahiff, Hendricks or Fa’anunu
During the 2019-2020 season, Clermont had hired four “World Cup” jokers. Among them were JJ Engelbrecht, Faifili Levave, Rudy Paige and Max Lahiff. The latter, playing as a pillar, arrived from Bath. This pillar with protruding abs was finally challenged during his medical visit for a problem with the cervical level. He has therefore never worn the ASM jersey and will subsequently join Bristol.
The case of South Africa Cornal Hendrick (12 selections) dates back to the 2016-2017 season. The swift Springbok could have joined the RCT. But after medical and physical tests, the Var club did not finalize the transfer. However, the nature of the physical concerns had not been specified.
The Tongan Pillar Paea Fa’anunu had two unsuccessful medical visits. First on the side of Grenoble in 2015 following an Achilles heel problem and then in Perpignan during the 2020-2021 season. The former Montpellier, Castres and Dax player was forced to end his career at just 31 years old. Finally, the last season, the Argentinian international pillar Lucio Sordoni (3 selections) had to sign as an additional player at Mont-de-Marsan. But a cervical problem canceled his transfer.
