Tennis, ATP – Washington Tournament 2022: Evans dominates Fritz

The retirement of American Taylor Fritz (pictured), seeded No. 3, allowed seeded No. 16 Daniel Evans to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Washington on Thursday evening at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington.

The score was 3-6, 7-6 [6], 4-1 when Fritz, 13th in the world at ATP, was unable to continue the meeting. Visibly exhausted, struggling to breathe and move, he started to falter between the second and third set.

He retired after conceding a double break in the third. Fritz, however, had a set and a break lead (6-3, 4-2).

Evans, 40th player in the world at the ATP, will face the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals of the Washington tournament.

During the previous round of the Washington Open, Daniel Evans had dominated Kyle Edmund without being worried about the score (6-1, 6-2). Fritz, who was playing his first match since his quarter-final at Wimbledon. He won against Australian Alexei Popyrin (6-4, 6-3).
