Tennis, WTA – Citi Open 2022: Marino dismisses Venus Williams

Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino reached the round of 16 in Washington last night, beating ex-world number one Venus Williams two sets to one (4-6, 6-1, 6-4), 42. and beneficiary of a wild-card.

It was Venus Williams’ first singles appearance on the WTA Tour since the Chicago tournament in August 2021.

She played mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Jamie Murray last month, winning and eliminating in the second round.

Break for Venus at third

Venus led 3-0 then 4-1 in the third set before conceding five straight games and stalling in 1:54 of play.

“It was my comeback, so the moments when I played well were pretty rare,” Venus said after the game. I was a bit overwhelmed. All I can do now is play more to get some rhythm back. Venus Williams is announced at the Toronto tournament next week.

Marino, ranked 111th in the WTA, will face the winner of the match between Germany’s Andrea Petkovic and Denmark’s Clara Tauson, seeded n°8, in the round of 16 of the Citi Open.
