The Disciplinary Commission of the LNR was not dead handed: Wednesday November 23, 2022, it lost ten week suspension director of La Rochelle Ronan O’Gara. What swells a locker now heavy.

The reason: “sensitivity to the best interests of rugby”. The Irish technician would have sent spicy messages to the attention of Franck Maciello, the National Director of Refereeing, to complain about the refereeing to his team.

Reason for Ronan O’Gara’s 10-week suspension

Ronan O’Gara was suspended for 10 weeks on the grounds of “attacking the best interests of rugby” and more specifically for “Any breach by a person referred to in article 714, of honor or probity, any conduct violent or abusive or defamatory remarks by a person referred to in section 714 with respect to another, leader or not, any breach of the duty of discretion, as well as any deliberate violation of the Federal Regulations or the Regulations Generals of the LNR or behavior likely to harm the image, reputation or interests of Rugby or its bodies, any breach of sports ethics and deontology, any non-compliance with a decision pronounced by a disciplinary body of the NRL”.

Ronan O’Gara requalified on January 30, 2023

In addition to his 10-week suspension, Ronan O’Gara received a fine of 20,000 euros, including 5,000 suspended sentences. He will be reclassified as of January 30, 2023, which will make him miss the next 10 games for his team (against Castres, Stade Français, Bordeaux-Bègles, Perpignan, Toulouse and Racing 92 in the Top 14). He will miss the entire group stage of La Rochelle in the Champions Cup (four games against Northampton and Ulster), whose team is defending champion.

At the same time, the Rochelais Stadium, because of the attitude of Ronan O’Gara, was sanctioned “under article 65 of the General Regulations of the NRL, with a fine of €20,000, including €5,000 suspended”. . The club, as well as the Irish manager, have a deadline of 7 days to appeal in the Appeal Commission of the FFR.

Ronan O’Gara’s Heavy Locker

Fail to recognize it: if in appearance, Ronan O’Gara can seem calm and reserved, it is a real pressure cooker inside. And regularly, he gets carried away. Mostly verbally. There are countless times when the microphones placed on the edge of the field have picked up inappropriate or offensive remarks. We remember his altercation with Christophe Urios in early April 2022, the Bordeaux manager even giving him a slap.

A scene that had earned the two protagonists… a reprimand. Ronan O’Gara was doing well, he who over the months at the head of Stade Rochelais has built up a sacred file. Since being promoted to manager in the summer of 2021, he’s been collecting them. The proof :

  • November 3, 2021: 2 week suspension after La Rochelle-Toulon for “action against a match official”.
  • April 6, 2022: 2 week suspension after La Rochelle-Racing 92 for “indiscipline”.
  • April 13, 2022: Blame after UBB-La Rochelle for “indiscipline”.
  • September 21, 2022: 6 week suspension after Lyon-La Rochelle for “action against a match official”.
  • November 23, 2022: 10 week suspension for “harming the best interests of rugby”.

We have rarely seen a coach in France being penalized so many times in such a short time. In addition to a tarnished image, it is very expensive for his club in terms of fines.
