For the last game of XV of France in this month of November, Julien Marchand was dazzling. Facing Japan, in a Stadium of Toulouse who never ceased to be amazed by his performance, the hooker of the Blues multiplied the devastating charges, gained a lot of ground, but also assured in conquest and scraped two balls on the ground. Logically, he got the man of the match trophy.
This distinction, it comes to crown a full autumn tour with the Blues, undefeated in 2022. Also a major player in the Grand Slam, the 27-year-old boy (23 selections) is today a reference to his position, and he does not is in no way absurd to regard it as the best hooker in the world.
Bouilhou praises Marchand’s match against South Africa
Has Julien Marchand ever been so strong? “I think he has already had periods like this where he has seen him very compact, very conquering, very aggressive. These are his strong points, and he has played well with them this fall, ”judges the Toulouse forwards coach, Jean Bouilhou.
The technician continues: “I think that before this autumn tour, we already saw him doing very good performances with us. He only confirmed that he managed to raise his level of play in these international matches. This demonstrates the competitor that he is”. Bouilhou, however, singles out one match in particular where he saw Julien Marchand very strong:
Against South Africa, during an excessively physically intense match, he more than existed. These are matches that suit him perfectly.
Julien Marchand absent against Lyon
Accounting for 172 minutes of playing time during the XV of France tour, Julien Marchand was put at rest for moving to Lyons Sunday November 27 (9:05 p.m.), match counting for the 11e Top 14 day. A meeting in which Thomas Ramos, Anthony Jelonch, Juan Cruz Mallia and David Ainu’u will not participate either. But also Antoine Dupontsuspended for 4 weeks and who will have to bite the brakes.
“In any case, Antoine would not have played in Lyon. What is problematic is for the start of the European campaign (against Munster on December 11, editor’s note) because we would have needed him, ”says Bouilhou. Who makes this confidence: “Knowing his character, he grits his teeth. His pride was touched on that one. We always learn from our mistakes, and as Antoine is a competitor…” The return of the Toulouse n°9 will be closely monitored when he returns in mid-December…
