Swiss football mourns one of its own. 34-year-old defender Nicolas Schindelholz died on Sunday September 18. The player had been suffering from lung cancer since 2020. He leaves behind a wife and four children. During his career, the left-hander had played in Basel, Thuns, Lucerne and finally in Aarau. The current coach of Switzerland, Murat Yakin, said he was particularly touched by this sad news since it was he who had recruited the rough central defender, when he was at FC Thun, in 2009. “It’s sadly missed. Nicolas was part of our family”regretted the former rear of FC Basel, in remarks reported by our colleagues from Blick. “Nicolas fought with such courage and dignity against the disease. He was an exemplary man, always at the service of the team. It is so unfair that a young dad and such a wonderful person should leaving so soon…”lamented the Swiss coach.

FC Aarau expresses its sincere condolences to the loved ones and wishes them much strength in this difficult time”wrote Nicolas Schindelholz’s latest team, on his Instagram account. “FC Luzern mourns the loss of its former player Nicolas Schindelholz and expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Rest in peace Nicolas”, for its part determined the Super League club. FC Basel has finally expressed its emotion after the announcement of the disappearance of its former U21 captain. Many Swiss football celebrities also paid tribute to the former central defender. Thus, Granit Xhaka or even Xherdan Shaqiri had a thought in the direction of the missing player and his relatives.
