Victor Perez: “It’s still a good season”

“Best card in career (-6) on the final of the DP World Tour, no bogey on this last round. What worked better than the previous days?
I wanted to have a good day, to end the year on a good note, which I managed to do. I hit the ball really well, I only missed one green at 3. I birdied the par 5s by taking them in two, except for the 14th, which means that we spend the day without sweating too much.

What is your assessment of this season?
Victory (at the Dutch Open in June), it remains the best moment of the season. It was one of my goals at the start of the year. After 2019 (first victory on the Tour at Dunhill Links), the 2020 and 2021 calendar with two Covid years, it was not easy. Having gone to play in the United States, having realized a lot of things… This year I had a focus on the European Tour and really wanted to regain what I had the chance to do in the -Down. I don’t know yet how much I will finish (around the Top 20 according to projections) but it’s still a good season, at the level I think I have. It’s up to me to continue working because even if I’m happy with my season, there’s still a lot to do.

“I don’t plan to play until Abu Dhabi, so it’s a seven-week break where we have time to work but at the end we arrive without a minute of play as we say in other sports”

What are your goals for next season?
I think they are clear for all European players with the Ryder Cup at the end of the year in Rome, the Olympic Games afterwards. This makes for very big deadlines for the French because the Games are in Paris. Plus a season, plus the European Top 10 (who will now access the PGA Tour) : the objectives are quite obvious. Afterwards, personally it will consist of trying to see with my staff where we can win a little, in which compartment of the game to improve. Trying to earn points here and there, even if it’s tenths you’re trying to find.

The Hero Cup (former Seve Trophy) will oppose a continental team against the British in January, we imagine that you hope to be there…
They will announce the team in the next few days. I think it would be an ideal start to the season. I don’t plan to play until Abu Dhabi, so that’s a seven-week break where we have time to work but in the end we arrive without a minute of play as we say in other sports. So it would be perfect to prepare Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which are still two Rolex Series to start the year. I think I had a good season to be able to contest this Hero Cup.

“We are coming to the end of the season, everyone has a little glitch here and there. Now is the time to do the physical work and improve a few areas of the game.”

How long are you going to go without touching the club?
I do not know yet. I’m going to the United States this evening, to New York, to see my physical preparation for a week, to take stock of the end of the year. All my staff will be there, we will have time to put everything back together, to prepare the calendar well for 2023, to do all the physical tests, golf, bio-mechanics because I have just come out of two tournaments and the body is still in golf mode. .

Once that’s done and we’re clear on our minds and we know how the season is going to go, I’m going to try to rest at home because even though it’s seven weeks, there’s Christmas, the 1st of the year plus a week in New York. It will pass very quickly. It will even be necessary to find two large blocks to prepare physically. We are coming to the end of the season, everyone has a little glitch here and there. Now is the time to do the physical work and improve some areas of the game because mid-January it will happen very quickly.

Where are you going to prepare for next season?
Probably in Spain because right now at home the weather is not the best (he lives in Scotland). I am lucky to have superb facilities in the South, which allow me to prepare in good conditions. I will probably go to Abu Dhabi from Malaga. »
