After two defeats in the Champions League, OM must avoid another bad result if they want to keep their chances in the competition. The challenge is huge for Igor Tudorbut not impossible.
OM: Revolution time has come for Igor Tudor
Under the leadership of his new trainer, Igor Tudor, Olympique de Marseille made an almost perfect start to the season in the league with six wins and two draws. The Marseillais currently occupy second place in the standings, two lengths behind PSG, and have 20 points in eight Ligue 1 days. It is even one of the best starts in the history of the Marseille club in the league. Thus, it is clear that the Croatian technician is doing an excellent job at OM at the start of the season. On the other hand, the situation is very different on the European scene, where Marseille successes are very rare.
Olympique de Marseille has only one victory in its last 17 matches in the Champions League, against 16 defeats. This terrible statistic should be put into perspective, because three of their losses were recorded in the round of 16, then in the quarter-finals in 2012. But this series of defeats illustrates how much trouble OM have to whistle their level of play in the most great of European competitions. The proof, last week, the men ofIgor Tudor missed their match against Eintracht Frankfurt on the second day of the Champions League. They lost at the Stade Vélodrome (0-1) against a German team, who nevertheless seemed within their reach. This loss at home is enough to place the Marseille team in a media turmoil.
With zero points on the clock and none but registered in two days of the Champions League, Marseille now occupies the last place in group D and sees its qualification already compromised. It is certainly too early to speak of a crisis, but Igor Tudor and his group will react quickly. They will especially have to make a full card during their double confrontation against the Sporting Portugal. The challenge is daunting, because the Portuguese club remains the group leader and is making an excellent start to the season. The question that arises is therefore whether OM is capable of accomplishing this mission. Pierre Menes is very skeptical.
Olympique de Marseille must no longer repeat the same mistakes
On his blog, the former consultant for Canal + believes that OM’s chances of being European next spring are very slim. Especially since it would not be a first in the history of the Marseille club to collapse at the worst of times. “Even in the Europa League, I’m afraid it will be difficult. If Marseille take only one point from these two games against Sporting Portugal, which is ultimately the best team in the group, they will eventually be last in the group (…) There is a kind of infirmity in this club to pass to the step above. And it’s a shame and a little bit tiring”he indicated.
It is true that Marseille remains on a black series in the Champions League, but the situation could be different in the coming days. And for good reason, the Marseillais no longer intend to reproduce the same errors. The experience of the past can and must serve as a lesson in order to put an end to this bad patch on the European scene. In addition, some recruits, who arrived during the summer transfer window, are intended to help the Marseille team achieve their goal this season. Alexis Sanchez, Jordan Veretout, Jonathan Clauss or Nuno Tavares, competent to lead their team to the light in C1. It would also be a fair reward for the Marseille public who are waiting for that.
OM: Igor Tudor with an important return in attack
OM locker room executives are also determined to lead their team as far as possible in the Champions League. However, the playmakers Dimitri Payet or Gerson, sometimes used in support of the Chilean, are struggling to regain their best level of play. However, solutions exist in the workforce with Cengiz Ünder, Luis Suarez or Amine Harit. Igor Tudor will therefore have to quickly find the right formula to relaunch his attack after the international break.
Moreover, according to the latest information from Provence, the OM coach is about to make a small revolution in his attacking sector with the return of Bamba Dieng. Sidelined since his failed transfer to OGC Nice, the Senegalese international has returned to the Marseille first team. He could even make a return to Tudor’s starting XI, which will bring Dimitri Payet a little lower. This option cannot be ruled out. But for now, Igor Tudor is facing some problems in defense.
While Samuel Gigot has still not recovered from his thigh injury, Éric Bailly is unavailable for three weeks. The Marseille coach hopes to be able to count on his central defender after the international break. And as if that weren’t enough, Chancel Mbemba was also injured after the draw against Stade Rennais (1-1). Igor Tudor therefore faces a real headache in defense. The international break then comes at the right time for the boss of the OM bench who will have ten days to prepare meticulously for the resumption of the championship.
