Women’s Basketball World Cup: Canada defeats Serbia at start

Canada easily won 67-60 over Serbia early in the Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia.

Kia Nurse, returning to action after an 11-month absence with a knee injury, scored nine points in 18 minutes.

Kayla Alexander, Nirra Fields and Nathalie Achonwa distinguished themselves with performances of more than 10 points. For the Serbs, Yvonne Anderson scored 18 points in 37 minutes in the loss. Tina Krajisnik also had an honorable game recording 17 points in 31 minutes.

The Canadians only trailed in the first quarter and then finished the game consistently. They outplayed their rival with a 44% shooting average, compared to 38%.

Victor Lapena’s troops take the provisional lead in Group B. Their next opponent will be France this Friday.
