XV of France. The 2022 season of the Blues is breathtaking: the proof in 10 crazy stats

Is this the best season in the history of the XV of France ? It must be admitted that 2022 marked the spirits, with facts rarely seen (with in particular the record, still in progress, of 13 victories in a row). Fabien Galthié, who has the best record as coach of the Blues, is building something strong, very strong. Back to the crazy numbers of this year 2022.

1. The XV of France was 1uh in the World Rugby rankings

It was somewhat furtive, because it only lastedone week. But for the first time in its history, the XV of France pointed top of the World Rugby Rankings. It was the day after the victory against Japan (15-20) in mid-July. Ireland next stole the crown of n°1 from him. France ends 2022 in second place. It’s still strong.

1bis. A single box

In addition to the quality of its defense, the XV of France shone in a major sector of modern rugby: the discipline. Over the year 2022, the Blues, who have in their staff the former international referee Jérôme Garcès, presented only one card. A red for Antoine Dupont during the clash against the Springboks.

8. Les Bleus top scorer of the year

In 2022, the XV of France scored 32 tries, which remains within its standards since Fabien Galthié took office. If 16 different markers are to be counted, one of them clearly stood out: Damien Penaud. The Clermontois, as in 2021, is the top scorer tricolor on the calendar year (8). He is, at 26, the 10e French top scorer of all time.

10/10. A 2022 season with only victories

The perfect score. Fabien Galthié and his staff expected a lot from the match against South Africa, the reigning world champion, and the only team in the world Top 10 that he had not faced (and therefore beaten). The shock in Marseille was crowned with a striking success, and above all, the XV of France knew how to stay unbeaten all-year 2022 (10/10). This had never happened to him in his history.

12 years. The wait for a new Grand Slam

Philippe Saint-André, Guy Novès, Jacques Brunel… The 3 previous coaches did not succeed. Fabien Galthié, he arrived there in his 3rde provisional: succeeding in the Grand Slam in the 2022 6 Nations Tournament. It took 12 years (2010, under Marc Lievremont).

18. The iron defense of the XV of France

We talked about discipline, but it is also clear that the XV of France builds its victories on a fearsome defense. In 2022, she averaged just 18 points per game. This is the best ratio over a calendar year since the price of function of Fabien Galthié. The presence of the Englishman Shaun Edwards in the staff is no stranger to this fine performance.

26. The number of players used during the Grand Slam

The XV of France will never repeat the Grand Slam of 1977, with all the matches played with the same 15 players. But the performance of 2022 is far from trivial, and above all shows the stability advocated by the staff of Fabien Galthié. During the Grand Slam, only 26 players were used. And again, winger Matthis Lebel only contested a single minute in Wales.

44. As the number of players used this season

This may seem like a lot on first reading. But it should be borne in mind that executives were left to rest (Dupont, Ntamack, Baille, Marchand, Alldritt, Fickou, Danty, etc.) during the summer tour in Japan, in which the Top 14 finalists. But in this year 2022, we felt that the France group was tightened. 44 players participated in at least one game for the Blues, that’s 13 less than in 2021.

75.4%. The success of French scorers

A year 2022, perfect and yet. The Blues can do better in the penalty shootout exercise. Huge in 2021, Melvyn Jaminet has marked time this year. The overall average of the Blues is 75.4% (52/59). This fall, Thomas Ramos won to raise the bar, achieving an 83.3% success rate. If they perceive this sector, the Blues can go very far in 2023, given how the lights are green in other sectors.

704. Damian Penaud, most used player

Damian Penaud is the X factor of the XV of France. The one who only needs a ball to snatch victory (like against Australia this fall). As in 2021, the winger is the player who counts the greatest playing time in the calendar year (704, he only missed one game out of 10). He is ahead Yoram Moefana (662 minutes) and Anthony Jelonch (614 minutes), the most used Blues forward in 2022.
